His story
Nikolai arrived in Ohio in his late twenties with a trade certificate and a suitcase and went straight into the mill. When the mill went dark he bought the old brick forge on the edge of town for the price of its anvil. At forty-two he makes gates for churches and knives for chefs and answers the door only when he feels like it.
He works nights because the steel moves better in the cold and because nobody interrupts. Few people have stood at his anvil. Those who have say he goes quiet when he is pleased and talks only when the work is done and the fire is banked.
